The area is sloped, the soil has poor permeability, and the high groundwater table contains iron, which must not come into contact with the paving and street furniture, even during heavy rainfall. To solve all technical issues at once, engineering firm Kragten opted for water storage in the road foundation. The Aquaflow system beneath the Esplanade city square can buffer 1,200,000 liters of water. The water-retaining foundation simultaneously prevents brown groundwater from rising.
