Why is there 10,000 M² of Aquaflow in Almere?
Almere showcases its best side at the Esplanade, a green and attractive space for KAF (Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland) and city center visitors. Initially, it wasn’t all that straightforward. The area is sloped, the soil has poor permeability, and the high groundwater table contains iron, which must not come into contact with the paving and street furniture, even during heavy rainfall. To solve all technical issues at once, engineering firm Kragten opted for water storage in the road foundation. The Aquaflow system beneath the Esplanade city square can buffer 1,200,000 liters of water. The water-retaining foundation simultaneously prevents brown groundwater from rising. The work was carried out by Antea and has recently been completed.
